En 1908, le petit Pu Yi, âgé de trois ans, lointain parent de l'impératrice douairière, est choisi par elle pour lui succéder. Trois ans plus tard, il doit abdiquer par suite de la révolution de Sun Yat Sen qui établit la première république de Chine. Il est cependant autorisé à rester comme figure symbolique dans la Cité interdite, palais traditionnel de l'empereur à Pékin. Chassé en 1924, il s'établit à Tientsin sous la protection des Japonais qui en font un souverain fantoche lorsqu'ils prennent le contrôle de la Mandchourie en 1931. Après la guerre, Pu Yi devient le prisonnier des communistes chinois qui le soumettent à une rééducation.
