Breakout Mission Espion is a spy role-playing game with live actors, presented at Quartier DIX30 in Brossard. Known in English as Spy Game, the concept goes beyond a classic escape room: instead of solving a series of puzzles in a closed room, your team goes undercover, sneaks around, hides, and disguises themselves to complete a mission without getting caught by a real guard.
Mission Espion (Spy Game): A Spy Game with Live Actors
Mission Espion is the first attraction at Breakout Brossard to feature live actors. These non-player characters (NPCs) patrol the setting and react to what you do. You must adapt, improvise, and make split-second decisions. Tension, adrenaline, and laughter are guaranteed: the experience combines escape room, immersive theater, and live-action role-playing.
The concept was created in Malaysia in 2022 by Superdough, the group behind the Breakout brand. Brossard is the first location outside Malaysia to offer the complete Spy Game campaign: five missions. Everything has been translated and adapted for the Quebec audience, hence the name Mission Espion.
How Does a Mission Work?
The principle is simple:
- come in a group of 2 to 6 players;
- choose your mission;
- gear up, listen to the briefing, and take action;
- outsmart the enemy: avoid the patrol agent by sneaking, hiding, and disguising yourself;
- complete your objective and exit before time runs out.
Each mission lasts 45 minutes of gameplay. Here, there are no puzzles to solve in a specific order: instead, there are tasks and mini-missions leading to the final objective. Bring your smartphone, as it is used to access a program during the game.
The 5 Missions and Their Difficulty Levels
All missions are linked to the same story: that of the Luddites, a cult founded in the wake of the Y2K bug scare, which rejects technology and severely punishes those who use it. You can play them in any order.
- Purify (easy): the starting mission, recommended for beginners. You must infuse an antidote into the base's water system. Physical activity: light climbing and balancing.
- Rescue (medium): save an agent captured by the cult. Moderate climbing and crawling.
- Infiltration (hard): steal documents containing the Luddites' plans. Difficult balancing.
- Sneak In (medium): retrieve a hidden camera in a soccer ball. Difficult balancing, extreme climbing and crawling, with intense horror and gore.
- Destroy (hard): the final mission, where you must place a bomb disguised as a sacred flower in the cult's garden. Climbing, intense horror.
The price is the same for each difficulty level. For a first encounter with the Spy Game, start with an easy or medium-level mission.
Minimum Age and Physical Condition
Mission Espion is not recommended for children. The game is very physical and designed for an audience of 12 years and older. Missions 4 and 5, which contain intense horror, gore, and cult role-playing, are more restrictive: the official FAQ reserves them for ages 16 and up (the page for mission 4 indicates 13 and up). Check the required age when booking.
Since crawling, climbing, and hiding are involved, the activity is not recommended for those with heart conditions, pregnant women, and people with reduced mobility. There is also an inherent risk in the activity, as with any physical game.
A few rules to follow during the game:
- handle objects gently;
- be respectful with the actors;
- avoid any physical contact with the NPCs (they won't touch you either);
- empty your pockets before leaving, in case an accessory has slipped in.
Budding Spies and Escape Games: Other Breakout Adventures
Breakout brings together three adventures in one place, all at 6000, boul. de Rome, in Brossard:
- Breakout – Surreal Escape Game (6000, boul. de Rome, suite 40; 450 926-0006): 11 escape game themes. A session lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes, including 60 minutes of gameplay in the room. The games are designed for ages 13 and up; children 12 and under must play with at least one paying adult.
- Mission Espion (6000, boul. de Rome, suite 30; 579 723-7230): the spy role-playing game with actors, for 2 to 6 players.
- Budding Spies (Spy Game Junior, 6000, boul. de Rome, suite 20, Brossard, QC J4Y 0B6; 579 723-7220): a family version for children aged 4 to 13, accompanied by an adult. Play as a family in a mysterious toy factory, with over 12 missions and three difficulty levels. Non-slip socks are mandatory (sold on-site). Budding Spies is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
